Albany -- Testimony began Tuesday in a lawsuit by a Dougherty County school board member against the School District and Beers Construction company.

Board member David Maschke is asking for more than one million dollars. Maschke was hired by Dougherty County Schools as an architect in 1997 to build a two million dollar expansion on West Town Elementary.

After 15 months Maschke was fired by the School Board because the project was still not underway and millions of dollars over budget.  Maschke was not a school board member at the time.

In opening statements Maschke's attorney said his client's business had been damaged by Beers Construction's criticism of his work and the school board firing him without cause.

The lawsuit is expected to last at least two weeks.
