Cairo - The Cairo High Syrumpakers will have 21 seniors on their roster this season.
And coach Tom Fallaw is counting on their leadership to lead the Syrupmakers to another region title.
Most high school football teams spend their preseason looking to replace the talent they lost from last year.
Cairo head coach Tom Fallaw is looking to find something else.
Fallaw said "First thing we are trying to do is find some ways to find some leaders and get better at what we are doing and then we will worry about our goals as we go."
One player who is ready to step up and lead the Syrupmakers is running back Fabian Cooper.
Cooper is a standout on offense and defense for the Syrupmakers where he led the team with over 1100 yards rushing.
Fabian Cooper said "The only way we are going to do what we have to do, win another region championship is for all the seniors to step up so the younger kids can follow behind us in our footsteps."
Since Cooper is a two-way player, coach Fallaw is looking for another running back to step up so his talented senior will not be worn down at the end of the season.
The Syrupmakers are also looking for a quarterback where right now Tyler Johnson is leading Milford Adams who will play somewhere on offense.
On defense, Cairo returns a secondary that had 16 interceptions last year and will have Robert Thornton and Allan Hopkins leading the front line.
Cairo hopes to be leading the pack again this year but coach Fallaw thinks the fight for the region 1-AAA title will be the fiercest in several years.
Fallaw said " This region this year I think is going to be a very good region this year. We are nervous before going into the season.
Cairo opens the season at home against Cook High on August 19th.
