Gas drive offs increase

August 4, 2005

Albany- The rate of gas drive off thefts is climbing almost as fast as the price of gas in South Georgia. The Albany Police Department reported 199 gas drive offs through June of this year. For the same period last year, they had only 169.

"During the past couple of months we've seen an increase in the number of gas drive offs it really fluctuates for the year, from month to month," said Lt. Tracy Barnes, Albany Police Department.

There were 16 of thefts just in June. Police say if they can get a license plate number from gas station surveillance tape, they will prosecute.
