Valdosta - Valdosta State has a new men's basketball coach. Mike Helfer, who has been the head coach at Southern Tech for the past eight seasons, has been named head coach of the Blazers.
Helfer has won 186 games in eight seasons at Southern Tech.
He has taken Southern Tech to three NAIA sweet 16 apperances and the Hornets have won their conference title the past two seasons.
Helfer takes over a Valdosta State program that has won two Gulf South Conference eastern division titles in the last four years and made two trips to the NCAA Division II regionals.
The Blazers return five players who had significant playing time from last season's team that won 18 games.
Helfer succeeds Jim Yarbrough who resigned in June to become head coach at Division I Southeast Louisiana.
Other finalists for the Valdosta State head coaching position were ABAC head coach and former VSU assistant Todd Shepard, Armstrong Atlantic head coach Jeff Burkhamer.
Blazer assistant Jeff Daniels withdrew from consideration earlier this week.
Mike Helfer will be formally introduced at a press conference likely to be scheduled next week.
