Valdosta - A South Georgia police chief is Georgia's Outstanding Police Chief of the Year.

Chief Frank Simons was given the distinction at the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police banquet in Savannah Tuesday night.

He's served as chief of the Valdosta Police Department since 1995 where he started a vehicle replacement policy and a new pay classification system that includes education incentive pay and college reimbursement programs. He also helped lead the department to state and international accreditation.

Simons was picked for the award from 530 other police chiefs in the state.
