Sylvester- Gus Brunson's smile will forever be remembered by those who knew him.

"You knew when Gus came in he had a smile on his face he walked right in the office and said this is my mom's office kind of thing, and he went straight to his mom, but he was a very personable person," says Tabitha DuPriest, Worth County Tax Commissioner.

DuPriest knew the soldier well. His mother Cathy has worked in the office for the past 13 years, and black bows now decorate the office in remembrance of Brunson.

"When we found out this news it was like we lost one of our own," says DuPriest.

"We kind of raised him here at the courthouse we feel like. He's one of our own, and so this has really hit home hard to us," says Capt. Trisha Fincher of the Worth County Sheriff's Office. "Gus was a really sweet guy. I thought a lot of him. He was a sweet child. He graduated with my son, so it's kind of like they grew up together."

Brunson was a 1994 graduate of Worth County High School and played football for the Rams. Those who knew him say he joined the guard to help others.

"He was a very humble-type person and he was a giving person and that's the reason that he joined because he wanted peace and he wanted to be able to help somebody," Fincher says.

Calls of support and condolence have been pouring in to his mother's office. DuPriest says it's a testament of how generous and loving Brunson was. In June, he emailed his mother telling her what he wanted for his 30th birthday.

"He didn't ask for anything but something for the kids in Iraq. He said mom these kids need things and they're so impressed with what we have in our glasses and our gloves. They can't have crayons because they melt with the heat, so can you send them some color pencils and some color books, and ask people for things. That's what I want for my birthday. So, that tells you what kind of person Gus Brunson was," says DuPriest.

That's how many say Gus Brunson will be remembered, as self-less soldier who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Funeral arrangements for Brunson have not been made. He is also survived by two children ages eight and nine. The names of the three other guardsman have not been released.
