Thomasville-- The Thomas County Special Response Team is being praised for peacefully ending a standoff Sunday night.

Authorities say Mark Alderman had been shooting at his house with a shotgun and rifle while his wife was inside. When deputies arrived, the 37-year-old fired in their direction at least eight times.

Investigator Pascal Autrey says deputies were on the verge of shooting Alderman when he backed-off. "But with the training the officers had, and a little bit of cooperation from Mister Alderman in this case, restraint by the officers bought them extra time," says Autrey.

Pepper spray bought the SRT enough time to tackle and arrest Alderman. He is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, and one count of reckless conduct. He's also charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
