Oxendine calls fire "Arson"

July 20, 2005

Fitzgerald-- A fire at a Fitzgerald discount store has been ruled arson by the state Insurance Commissioner.

Investigators say the blaze at the Dollar General store started in the aisle where paper towels are stocked. The store is listed as a total loss, with damages estimated at $1 million.

That means that if convicted, the perpetrator will face serious prison time. "When we can conclude our investigation on this thing, if we found out that arson is the cause of the fire then definitely they will be charged with arson in the first degree," said Fitzgerald Police Detective Tommy Clark.

Investigators are asking for anyone with information about who may have started the fire to contact the Fitzgerald Police.
