Health district gets hurricane relief

July 18, 2005

Valdosta - South Georgia has a new tool to bring relief during hurricane season.

The South Health District is getting a hurricane cache to provide safe shelter from severe weather. The 20-foot mobile trailer will hold 750 cots and a power generator.

It will be located in Valdosta, but can be used for sheltering support anywhere in the state.

"Last year in our district, we had more evacuees than any other district in the state, so obviously there was a need for us to have additional cots in place to help shelter people in the event that they have to evacuate from Florida," said Jennifer Steedley.

The cache was bought with money from the C.D.C. hurricane preparedness fund.

It should be in place by August 1st.
