Dennis devastates crops

July 11, 2005

Colquitt County - The high winds and heavy rain from Hurricane Dennis could be devastating for South Georgia farmers.

They're still trying to assess the damage the storm caused to cotton, peanut, and tobacco crops. Right now, the fields are too wet and soggy for farmers to get in.

Extension agents say they're particularly worried about the tobacco crop, which already had a lot of wilt and viruses from all the rain we saw last month.

"From wind blowing the plants around to water logged soil and the leaching out of fertilizer, a lot of things likthat have happened to hurt the crops," said Glenn Beard, Extension Agent.

Beard says a lot of sunshine and light wind like we saw today will help the crops recover from the storm.
