Witcher, Moseley in hunt at State Am

July 8, 2005

SAVANNAH, Ga. --Savannah's Brian Harman turned in a six-under 65 to take the lead after the second round of the Georgia Amateur Championship, taking place at The Savannah Golf Club, July 7-10.  Harman's 36-hole total of five-under 137 leads by one stroke over Jay Moseley of Bainbridge and Brent Witcher of Duluth, who shot 68 and 70, respectively, in the second round.

A pair of former GSGA champions is tied for fourth at three-under 139, as David Noll, Jr. of Dalton, the 2003 Georgia Amateur Champion, and Doug Hanzel of Savannah, the 2004 Georgia Mid-Amateur Champion, have identical scores of 71-68 in the first two rounds.

Jack Hall of Macon, who is a member of Savannah Golf Club, currently sits in sixth place at two-under 140 after an even-par 71 in the second round.  Three players are tied for seventh at one-under, including Chris Hall of Marietta, defending champion David Denham of Tifton and Johnathan Shaw of Cartersville, who fired a second-round 67.

First-round leader Toby Browne, Jr. of Savannah followed up his first-round 67 with a four-over 75.  He currently owns sole possession of 10th place at even-par 142.

Harman began the day at No. 1 and made the turn at two-under, thanks to birdie putts on holes 3 and 5.  He then went birdie-eagle-birdie on 10, 11 and 12, and added another birdie at 15 to move to seven-under for the round.   He put his approach shot on 11 to within eight feet for the eagle putt, and sunk a 30-footer on 15 for the birdie.  He missed a three-foot par putt on 16 to drop a stroke, and carded par on his last two holes to finish at six-under for the day, five-under for the Championship.

"I was hitting the ball everywhere yesterday, and you just can't do that
here," said Harman, comparing his two rounds.   "Today I played much
smarter, and I putted well."

Moseley, who began his round on No. 10, also eagled No. 11.  He then birdied No. 12, 14 and 18 to make the turn with a five-under 31.  His second nine wasn't as kind, as he bogeyed the second, fourth and ninth holes, but added a birdie on No. 6 to finish with a 68, three under par.

Witcher, who trailed Browne by a stroke after the first round, got off to a
rough start with bogeys on holes 1 and 3.  He mad the turn at two-over after a birdie on five and a bogey on nine.  He played the back nine bogey-free, with birdies on 11, 12 and 17 to finish at one-under 70 for the day.

The field was cut to the low 70 and ties after the second round, with the cut line falling at 10-over 152 and 74 players advancing to the weekend.  The par-71 layout at The Savannah Golf Club is playing to approximately 6,361 yards.

The third round gets underway Saturday at 8:00 a.m.  Harman, Moseley and Witcher tee off from No. 1 at 10:00 a.m.

The GSGA conducts 18 statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups, three interstate matches and 17 USGA qualifying events each year.  Other services include computerized handicapping, course rating and measuring, a summer-long junior sectional competitions program, Golf Georgia magazine and two college scholarship programs.
