Burns gives back

July 2, 2005

Thomasville-- When Thomasville native Joe Burns signed as a free agent with the Buffalo Bills three years ago, one of the first things he wanted to do was give back to his hometown. Burns finally got that chance Saturday as he hosted his first annual football camp at Thomas County Central High School.

More than one hundred kids turned out for the day long camp which was free to all who participated. Helping Burns run the camp were friends and former teammates like Joe Hamilton, Johnny Cooksey, and Danny Copeland. Campers were put through various drills and taught the fundamentals of the game and even enjoyed a BBQ lunch.

Burns, who re-signed as a free agent with the Bills back in March, says he hopes the kids who attended Saturday's camp at the very least take away an important message.

"If I was a kid and someone put on a camp and charged I wouldn't have been able to go. So I look at like, kids that 's my heart. I just want to let them know that they can reach the stars if they just work hard and put God first anything is possible," Burns said.

Burns says he plans on making his camp an annual event.
