Valdosta - A South Georgia man was shot by a police officer after he led cops on a chase.

Shortly after 11:00 Monday night, Valdosta police responded to a call of shots fired on Brookhaven Street. A Lowndes County deputy spotted a car matching the suspects description and pulled it over. The driver stopped, but then took off again and was blocked in by another police car.

When Officer James Winningham told the suspects to get out, 19-year-old Eugene Patterson sped toward him and was shot in the leg by Winningham. "It looks like the officer was justified because since the vehicle was headed towards him, he had reason to fear for his safety," said Captain Brian Childress.

After Patterson was shot, he kept driving for about another mile until he crashed into a ditch on Wooding Lane. He was treated and released from the hospital.

Patterson and two passengers in the car, 19-year-old Danny Dubose and 21-year-old Adrian Williams, are all charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of a firearm during a felony, and possession of cocaine.

Officer Winningham has been placed on administrative leave until an internal affairs investigation is finished.
