DTAE Commissioner speaks out on nepotism scandal

The man who oversees Georgia's 34 technical colleges stands by his decision to force college presidents to fire their relatives.

After a nepotism scandal at an Atlanta area technical college, Department of Technical and Adult Commissioner Mike Vollmer ordered all the presidents to get rid of relatives they hired. State education policy prohibits the hiring of immediate relatives.

"It certainly didn't impact students at all. It just impacted the hiring and firing quite honestly in our central office. We hope that it's over with. We're taking steps now to make sure that never happens again," says Vollmer.

A total of five relatives were found on payrolls of Georgia technical colleges including two at East Central Tech in Fitzgerald.
