Albany- A familiar face and longtime educator is back in Albany to take lead Albany State University until a new president is chosen.

Dr. Julius Scott will serve as interim president for several months.

"This place needs a new president and it needs a president to come soon because new presidents should open the academic year," Scott said.

He was also interim president in 1996 before Dr. Portia Shields was hired. Wednesday, the Board of Regents Chancellor helped welcome Dr. Scott back to Albany.

He says about 300 candidates applied for the permanent job.

"The search is underway now and we hope to have someone by at least the middle of the fall semester at the latest," Meredith said.

Dr. Shields is doing some work for the Board of Regents and an ASU spokeswoman says she may be considering another presidency.
