Valdosta - A historical African American celebration kicks off in Valdosta this week.
Juneteenth is the anniversary of when slaves were set free. The celebration starts Wednesday with a steak dinner fundraiser at Mathis City Auditorium. Thursday there will be a free picnic at Barber Park followed by a Fish Fry and Gospel Fest Friday night in Olympic Park.
The events wrap up Saturday with a fun run and all day activities in Payton Park. "Its a way of meeting new people, just communicating, giving you some history and the opportunity to see some things that you may not know existed," said Beverly Sanders, Organizer.
All proceeds from this year's Juneteenth celebration will benefit the Southside Library.
