Volunteers help relieve hunger

June 7, 2005

Valdosta - South Georgians are giving their time to help feed the hungry.

As part of National Hunger Awareness Day, people all over the country volunteered at their local food banks. At America's Second Harvest in Valdosta, youth groups helped sort food and medicine and mailed out marketing information for upcoming fund raisers.

Workers at the Food Bank hope today will help raise awareness about poverty and hunger in our area. "Hunger is a huge problem in South Georgia, you've got an average poverty rate in this area of about 23 percent and we have families every day in need of food assistance. Our Kids Cafes alone feed between 900 and 1,200 meals every night to kids who normally would not have a meal," said Frank Richards, Food Bank Director.

The food bank also held an open house Tuesday afternoon to recruit new volunteers.
