Albany - Albany State basketball coach John I. Davis has made no secret that he is grooming his assistant Chris Cameron to take over the Rams hoop program in the near future.
The former Dougherty High standout believes it is best to continue his coaching education at a different school.
That is why Chris Cameron is leaving Albany State after four seasons to become an assistant coach at Xavier University in New Orleans.
Cameron will be working for Xavier head coach Dannton Jackson who was assistant for the NAIA school when Cameron was playing at Tulane University.
Under John I. Davis and Chris Cameron, Albany State went from worst to first in the SIAC in just four seasons.
Chris Cameron says he would definitely return to the Rams if the school wanted him as their head basketball coach.
And if that were to happen, the 30-year old Cameron believes he would be a better head coach by seeing how other head coaches run their programs.
Chris Cameron said "I think it is one of the best opportunities for me right now but like I said I love Albany State. I love Albany. And if the opportunity opens up for me in the future, then I would love to come back."
Chris Cameron finishing his sixth annual summer basketball camp which had some 50 young players this week. Cameron says he plans to continue his camp next summer here in Albany.
