Albany - As you enjoy a long weekend with friends and family, don't forget the purpose of Memorial Day. Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day to remember war veterans who've died.

Thursday, Floral Memory Gardens Cemetery in Albany, placed flags on the graves of the veterans. An eternal flames burns in the cemetery, as a constant reminder of the sacrifice veterans pay for our country's freedom.

"I think we need to honor our veterans because of what they've done for us. We're free today because of them. I think that's very important," said Manager Barbara Eason.

Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.
