Cavs off to good start at NJCAA golf

May 24, 2005

Scottsboro, Al.- The Darton golf team showed the rest of the junior college division two teams why they have been ranked number one all season.

With three of their top four scores under par, the Cavaliers posted a four-under par 284 to grab a four shot lead after the first round of the NJCAA Division II golf tournament in Scottsboro, Alabama.

Tyler, Texas Community College is just four shots back in second while Mott, Minnesota Community College and Mesa, Arizona Community College are tied for third place at 292.

Darton freshman Brent Witcher posted the second lowest round of the day with a 69. Jason Flowers and Ryan Parker both shot a two-under par 70. The Cavaliers fourth score was a 75 which was the score of both Michael Gordy and Ryan Wilson

Head coach Dale Dover was very pleased with the first round lead because he says the last thing he wanted was for his team to spend the final three rounds playing catch-up.

The depth of the Darton team is shown with sophomore Brandon Anthony.

The sophomore from Deerfield-Windsor is the sixth man on the Cavalier team but is playing in this tournament as an individual status.

Anthony, who has signed to play at Troy University next year, is in the hunt for the medalist title with a 70. His score though does not count towards Darton's team total because each team is allowed only five players.
