#1 Darton golfers ready for nationals

May 20, 2005 .

Albany - The Darton College golf team has been ranked number one all year in the National Junior College Division II poll.

Next week, the Cavaliers plan to live up to that ranking at the national tournament next week.

This is Darton's fourth straight trip the NJCAA Division II two tournament.

Last year's sixth place finish was the best the Cavaliers have done in their previous three national tournaments.

Those three tournaments though were all played in Arizona.

This year, the tournament moves to Scottsboro Alabama and a course the Cavaliers played when Darton won the Goose Pond Spring Fling back in March.

Another advantage for the Cavaliers is that they have the top players in the nation in Brent Witcher and Jason Flowers who are ranked first and second based on their scoring average.

Darton sophomore Justin Flowers said "We know the layout of the golf course pretty well. So, that won't be a problem. We just have to go out there and play our game."

Darton freshman Brent Witcher said "I think it is good. Because we play in weather that is very similar. It is not a big change you know from heat wise. Obviously, it is pretty hot here. So, I think it will help."

When Darton loads up this weekend to travel to Scottsboro, the Cavaliers will stow their gear and luggage into a trailer that has been donated by McGregor Golf.

The trailer will save the Cavalier golf team several thousand dollars in each year in travel costs.
