Thomasville- The Thomas University Lady Night Hawk softball team will begin defense of their national title this weekend in the NAIA national tournament in Decatur, Alabama. The Lady Night Hawks, who earned the top seed in the 20 team field, begin pool play on Friday morning against Virginia-Wise.
The team getting a warm sendoff Wednesday morning on the Thomas University campus as they loaded up the bus bound for Decatur. The top ranked Lady Night Hawks are coming off a Region 13 championship in which they defeated third ranked Mobile University in the championship game.
Lady Night Hawks coach Vinny Dima says he hopes the team can use that momentum along with last year's experience in the nationals to their advantage this weekend.
"We definitely have an advantage. For one, the players that have been there they want to get back there and do it again. For two, for players that are newcomers that are going to experience this, they've got those players to fall back on and ask them, 'How's it going to be? What can I expect?,'" coach Vinny Dima said.
"So many people on our team have been to a national championship before and that helps so much because it takes the pressure off the players, it takes the pressure off the coach because he knows we've been in these situations before," senior Gillian Loughead said.
