Celebrating Cinco de Mayo

Dougherty County-- Today is Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican holiday that Americans love to celebrate. Thursday afternoon, students at International Studies Magnet School in Albany learned the history of the holiday and had a little fun.

They learned the traditional Mexican hat dance and the not-so-traditional Macarena. Albany State Spanish Professor Dr. Francisco Juarez-Torres explained that Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of the Mexicans over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862.

"They can learn about other cultures and differences. In this country which is made up of many cultures, we should learn and appreciate other cultures," said the professor.

Cinco de Mayo is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually September 16th.
