Sylvester - Sgt. Major James Nelson has been preparing his troops to go to Iraq for months. He says, "My duties center around making sure the soldiers are trained in their individual war fighting skills."

Now, those skills are honed, and the soldiers will soon leave for their year-long mission overseas, but for today, Sgt. Major Nelson, is relaxing, as husband James Nelson with his wife Pat of 33 years. Pat says, "I'm just proud of him. I'm very proud of him. He's always been an upright, standup man, and he's always made the right decisions, and I know that God's going to bring him home safe, so I'm just proud of him."

And he is proud of her, for standing by his side during his 30-year career in the military and what will soon be his third deployment. He says, "I chose to and she chose to support me throughout it all."

But after he returns from his tour of duty this time, he plans to retire. Sgt. Major Nelson says, "This will be my third and final deployment."

While on his final mission, he has a very special task: "Make sure soldiers' needs are taken care of," he says, "make sure their families are taken care of." And make sure they all return home safe.

Sgt. Major Nelson will return to Ft. Stewart Thursday, May 12th. Members of the 48th will begin deploying to Kuwait on May 15th.
