UGA's Davis ready for NFL draft

April 21, 2005

Shellman - The town of Shellman had a first round draft pick five years ago when Donnell Harvey was selected by the NBA's New York Knicks.

On Saturday, Shellman should have their first NFL first round draft pick.

That future NFL star is of course Georgia safety Thomas Davis who around Shellman answers to the name "Pokey".

Most everyone in Shellman lining up to get "Pokey's" autograph at the Back Porch Restaurant Thursday afternoon.

Thomas Davis is glad to be back at home spending the last four months preparing for the draft.

Davis has worked out for six teams- the Saints, Panthers, Chiefs, Lions, Rams and Bengals.

He says all of those teams say the will draft him in the first round if he is available.

Who will draft Davis will also determine where he will play in the NFL.

Most of the so-called draft experts have been saying Thomas Davis will move to linebacker in the NFL.

Davis says of the teams he has talked to all but the Saints believe he should remain a defensive back.

Thomas Davis said "A lot of the draft experts are saying outside linebacker but five of the six teams that I met with are saying definite safety.

And they were basically saying a team would be crazy to move you from the position just based on what they had seen.

But like I told the teams I am willing to play either position. I am very open to playing linebacker. Just whatever will get me to the NFL, I am very willing to do it."

While Davis will play either position, he would prefer to remain at safety since it is the position he has played at Georgia.

Thomas Davis is planning to watch the draft with the entire town at the softball field in Shellman on Saturday.

Of the various draft projections, Davis is expected to be taken in the middle to the late first round.
