Yarbrough staying at VSU

April 19, 2005

Valdosta - Valdosta State will not have hire a new head basketball coach.

Jacksonville University will hire Georgia Tech assistant coach Cliff Warren who will be officially introduced at a press conference on Wednesday.

The other finalist for the J.U. job was Valdosta State head coach Jim Yarbrough.

Both Yarbrough and Warren went through a second interview on Monday.

Jim Yarbough was a strong candidate for the job not only because he has won 97 games in five seasons and has led the Blazers to two Gulf South Conference Eastern Division titles and two trips to the NCAA Division II regionals.

Yarbrough was also a front runner because he coached new Jacksonville athletic director Alan Verlander when Verlander was in high school in the Jacksonville area.

Yarbrough, who was also a candidate at V.M.I., told WALB News 10 that the disappointment of not getting the J.U. job is softened by the fact that he loves coaching at Valdosta State and is looking forward to next season.
