Rams backs are to the wall

Albany- The Albany State baseball team finds themselves in some unfamiliar territory after the first day of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball tournament- the loser's bracket.

Tuskegee took advantage of some shaky Albany State defense and some cold Ram bats to beat the four time defending conference champs 4-3 Thursday morning.

Albany State led 3-2 but a throwing error by pitcher Jordan Cambron led to Tuskegee to tie the game in the top of the eighth.

The Tigers took the lead on a triple by Troy Nunnally in the top of the ninth that scored Ronald Woullard.

Albany State recovered from that loss by eliminating LeMoyne-Owen 16-11 in the losers bracket game.

The Magicians jumped to a 3-0 lead but Albany State took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the second.

Albany State will face Clark Atlanta at 10:00 am Friday morning.

The eighth seeded Panthers upset top seeded Miles in the first round.

The news was much better for the Albany State softball team.

The Lady Rams, the top seed from the SIAC's eastern division, easily beat the Clark Lady Panthers 8-0 at the Highland Complex.

Albany State will play Miles at 11:00 am Friday morning.

Over at the Albany State track, the Lady Rams lead Fort Valley State 50-27 in the battle for the team competition.

The Lady Rams got field event wins from Shannon Armbrister in the shot put and Niki Giles in the hammer throw.

Giles also finished second in the shot put.

Lasheena Rice has a comfortable lead halfway through the heptathlon.

The defending SIAC men's champion Albany State track team trailing Morehouse 64-38 points after day one of the men's conference meet.

Scotty Pittman won the men's shotput for Albany State and Rodney Magwood finished second.

Brandon Rouhlac is leading at the halfway point of the decathlon.

The SIAC tennis tournaments get underway Friday at the Albany State courts where Albany State plays LeMoyne-Owen for a berth in Saturday's finals.
