Albany- An Atlanta author stops in Albany to discuss the importance of teaching children to read.

Dr. Bill Hammond spoke to a small crowd at the Thronateeska Heritage Center about his new book, Teaching African American Children to read at home and at school.

Hammond has been a teacher for over 35 years and currently oversees several schools for kids with academic and behavioral challenges. He says, teaching children the importance of reading is as simple as showing them a little success.

"What we hope to do is to share information about successes, practitioners that are actually accomplishing it, and to say and share with as many people as we possibly can," said Hammond.

Hammond's book is available at the Thronateeska Heritage Center.
