Albany-- One of the nation's most popular and successful black columnists spoke in Albany Wednesday.

Susan Taylor is the Editorial Director of Essence Magazine and has authored three books, including the best seller In the Spirit: The Inspiration Writings of Susan Taylor.

Taylor encouraged the crowd at Darton College to use education to better themselves and their community. She said finding inner inspiration is key to success.

"Encouraging yourself and surrounding yourself with people that think you are fabulous, not people that tear you down and have negative things to say," Taylor said. "And, also have a plan for yourself, some short range goals and some long term ones as well."

Taylor grew up in Harlem, and started a successful skin care business before becoming editor-and-chief of Essence Magazine.
