Dawson - A Dawson city councilman convicted of aggravated assault will be kicked off the council, but it's not clear when.
A jury convicted Joseph Breedlove of aggravated assault, cruelty to a child, marijuana possession, and a weapons charge. He pistol whipped a teenager and shot out tires on his car.
Under state law, Breedlove must be removed from office. However if he appeals, he could stay on the council a little longer. "Any time that it might provide an opportunity for the conviction to be overturned, they're still eligible to hold public office," said Dawson City Attorney Tommy Coleman.
Breedlove's attorney said that they won't decide about an appeal until after sentencing. No date has been set for sentencing.
Breedlove's city council seat would be vacant until a special election is held, as early as June.
