Officers want help with fraud ring

Albany-- Dougherty County Sheriff's Investigators want your help finding five people involved in stealing checks and credit cards at Phoebe Putney Hospital.

Authorities are studying surveillance photos of two people they think are part of a stolen check gang operating in Albany. They are writing checks stolen March fourth from several purses stolen from offices at Phoebe Putney.

"The purses were all stolen on the same day within a very short time of each other," said Dougherty County Sheriff's Lt. Craig Dodd. "And they were all stolen on the third floor of Phoebe and on the third floor of the Phoebe Towers."

Before they were even missed, these people cashed a number of those checks. Video shows the same man and woman, along with a third woman cashing another check in the drive through window. They are driving a Pontiac Sunfire.

The man also used a counterfeit check with stolen information to get cash from an Albany bank. So far at least five thousand dollars has been stolen, with more checks coming in daily.

The man tried to get cash with a stolen credit card, and phony Oklahoma drivers license. When the teller said she needed to check the card, the man ran.

Investigators think the checks and credit cards were all stolen from purses at Phoebe offices, and warn people to lock up their valuables, even at work.

"They know that if there are any big drawers, that is where the purse is going to fit. They whip that one open first. They were going as fast as they could, probably trying to get as many purses as they could get," Lt. Dodd said.

If you can help, please call the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office at 431-3222.
