Valdosta seeks to improve workers wages

Valdosta - A South Georgia community is trying to increase the wages its workers take home.

A recent study shows that Valdosta has the 16th largest labor force in the state, but when it comes to weekly wages, the city ranks 91st.

The Partnership for Metropolitan Development has formed a Targeted Business Task Force to help recruit higher paying businesses and improve the overall workforce in the metropolitan area.

"The goal is to get more jobs in Lowndes County and the surrounding areas because it really is the region, anything we can do within this region is going to help everybody," said Ken Stanley, Task Force Member.

The average weekly wage in the Valdosta metropolitan area is $467.00.

The task force has hired an economic consultant from Georgia Tech to help them identify problems in their workforce and find ways to attract more higher paying jobs.
