Baseball legend honored nationally

Washington- Jackie Robinson was honored today in Washington with the Congressional Gold Medal.

It's the highest award Congress can give a civilian. Robinson was born in Cairo on January 31, 1919. Members of the Jackie Robinson Cairo Memorial Institute say they couldn't be more proud. "It's a great honor, and I feel he deserves this award because he has done so many great things for mankind. That's why he's been so great," says Lula Hadley Walden.

The medal honors Robinson for becoming the first African-American player in Major League Baseball and his efforts with civil-rights. He signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.
