Cairo- Eastside Elementary School Second grader Erica Atkinson is a pen-pal of sorts with the Commander-in-Chief.
During the presidential election, her class held a mock vote and Mr. Bush won. That's when the students decided to try writing the President a letter. But teacher Helen Martineau says Atkinson's penmanship shone the most. And Atkinson was thrilled with the kudos. "My teacher said we could write to the President. All of our class wrote to the President. And my teacher picked me," she says.
The highlight of the lesson for Erica was receiving a response letter from President Bush himself. He explained the importance of voting when she's old enough, and even included a signed picture.
