Board appoints interim superintendent

Americus- After a controversial resignation, the Sumter County School system has a new leader.

Thursday night, the board named former Lee County Superintendent Dr. Robert Clay as interim superintendent.

Sumter Superintendent Franklin Perry resigned. The NAACP says he was fed up with racial discrimination by white members of the school board.

Perry would not comment, but his resignation letter says he tried unsuccessfully to unite the board.

In December, the board decided not to renew Perry's contract in a vote split on racial lines.

The board is holding a public forum to hear what the community wants in a superintendent. The forum is tentatively scheduled for March 3 at 7 p.m. at the old Sumter County High School.
