Panel to make Mathis decision Wednesday

Albany-- A three-person panel may decide Wednesday if indicted Albany commissioner Henry Mathis will stay in office while he awaits trial.

Decatur Mayor Bill Floyd, Macon City councilwoman Anita Ponder and Attorney General Thurbert Baker are on the panel.

Bill Floyd said Tuesday they've already reviewed the indictment and will decide if the charges affect Henry Mathis' ability to serve as a commissioner while awaiting trial.

Mathis is accused of voting to give an alcohol license to an Albany nightclub then extorting money from Joe McDonald, a businessman connected to the club. Mathis's trial is tentatively scheduled for April.
