Coffee High hires football coach

February 11, 2005

Douglas - The Coffee High Trojans have a new head football coach.

The county school board Friday morning approved hiring former University of Florida player and assistant coach Jerry Odom to succeed Bonwell Royal.

This is Odom's first head coaching job but it is not often that a high school has the chance to hire someone with Odom's extensive college coaching experience.

A team captain at Florida in 1990, Jerry Odom was an high school assistant in Florida while also playing for the Orlando Predators in the Arena Football League from 1992-1998.

Odom then joined Steve Spurrier's staff at Florida and stayed in Gainesville when Ron Zook was hired in 2002.

Jerry Odom left Gainesville for East Carolina to work as defensive coordinator under John Thompson who resigned after last season.

Instead of looking for another job in the college ranks, Jerry Odom decided to return to high school coaching where he would be able to spend more time with his family.

Odom takes over a Coffee High program that went 5- 5 last year missing the AAAAA state playoffs.
