Could emergency lanes be open for traffic?

February 3, 2005

Valdosta - Some Georgia lawmakers want to open emergency lanes to avoid congestion on some of the state's busiest interstates and highways.

The lanes would only be open to normal traffic during rush hours. Department of Transportation Commissioner Harold Linnenkohl says this may cause safety hazards and would be costly.

The plan, also known as "flex auto-lines" has been used in used in at least four other states.
