Albany-- A warrant has now been taken for the teacher's arrest. Thirty-two-year-old Michael Lewis, a teacher at Radium Springs Middle School, is suspended and charged with simple battery, a misdemeanor.

Police say Lewis grabbed a 14-year-old student by the neck in the school hall back in October. The student's parents complained to school administrators. But Lewis was not suspended so the parents called police.

"There are allegations he grabbed a student inappropriately around the neck," said School System Attorney Tommy Coleman.

"A lot of times kids, especially in junior high, don't do exactly what you want them to do," said Coleman. "But you got to deal them with an appropriate manner. You can't lay your hands on them of course."

The Radium Springs Middle School principal was told of the incident as soon as it happened in October, but she says she investigated and didn't believe the teacher did anything wrong.

The Dougherty County School board will discuss Michael Lewis' arrest in their meeting tomorrow.
