Deputies serving warrants find meth lab

January 17, 2005

Chula- Tift County deputies intended to serve twenty-six year old Joseph Benefield with four forgery warrants when they smelled a chemical odor coming from the home.

Inside, deputies found an operational meth lab. Twenty-one year old Kristin Hicks of Decatur, Tennessee, was also arrested. The couple's 18 month old baby was also in the house.

"DFACS is already involved in the case. They were here earlier to meet and of course the first thing to make sure of the safety of the child. Thankfully the child was fine, but I'm sure there will be some additional charges pending in the case," says public information officer David Haire.

The baby is now in the custody of grandparents. Animal control officers also took pit bull from Benefield's house. Benefield and Hicks are being held in the Tift County jail.
