Royal resigns at Coffee

January 14, 2005

Douglas - Coffee High football coach Bonwell Royal is stepping down after his second stint as the head coach of the Trojans.

The announcement came at a called meeting of the Coffee County School Board Friday morning in Douglas.

The veteran coach is one of the 50 winningest coaches in the state with 187 victories.

Bonwell Royal was first hired at Coffee High in 1972 where he won 164 games and three region titles before retiring in 1994.

Royal returned to Coffee High in 2001 and in the last four seasons has led the Trojans to three playoff appearances and the region 1-AAAAA title.

In a written statement, Bonwell Royal says simply after 34 years of coaching it his time for him to step aside.

Coffee County school board members and high school administrators all thanked Royal for his service to the Coffee High football program.

Coffee County will immediately begin their search for Bonwell Royal's successor and the Coffee High head coaching job will be posted throughout the state and southeast.
