Fitzgerald- More than 80 South Georgians lost their jobs this week when a long-time meat packing plant shut its doors.

The Lowell Packing Company closed after 75 years in business when the owner retired this week. Two business people from Florida, who are already in the meat-packing industry, are looking at buying the plant. Community leaders hope new owners will rehire some of those employees.

"And these employees have been there for years on end and so it's a great impact to the community," said John Flythe, the economic development director for the Chamber of Commerce in Fitzgerald.

There are about 15 people who are still working, including office staff.
