Jackets sting Hurricanes

January 5, 2005

Atlanta(AP) - Will Bynum's 21 points helped cover for B.J. Elder's absence as 9th ranked Georgia Tech beat Miami 80-69 in both teams' ACC opener.

The 10-2 Yellow Jackets built a 14-point halftime lead and held off Miami's surge in the first five minutes of the second half.

The Yellow Jackets also got 15 points from Luke Schenscher.

Jarrett Jack, who had a huge game in last week's overtime loss at 2nd rankedKansas, chipped in 14 points and a team high nine rebounds.

The 9-3 Hurricanes moved from the Big East to the ACC this season.

They came into their conference debut with an eight-game winning streak.

But they couldn't keep it going, even with 27 points from Guillermo Diaz.

Elder injured his left hamstring against Kansas, costing Georgia Tech its second-leading scorer.

He is unlikely to play on Saturday against Virginia.
