Information from The Georgia Department of Labor- The Georgia Department of Labor says Metro Albany's unemployment rate increased to 8.7 percent in June, up three-tenths of a percentage point from 8.4More >>
The rate increased because of seasonal factors, such as the summer job loss among non-contract school workers and temporary layoffs, primarily in manufacturing. There were 60,500 jobs in Albany in June, down by 300, or 0.5 percent, from 60,800 in May. Most of the loss came in state government and the service-related industries.More >>

Sumter County- A cow apparently waded to an island in the middle of Lake Blackshear and got stuck there. Today, she was rescued from life threatening danger.

The water is now rising after it was lowered for people to repair their docks. The cow would have likely drowned had it stayed on the island. A Georgia State Patrol helicopter crew attached a harness to their chopper. The cow, who had been sedated, was strapped in and flown over the lake to safety.

Onlooker Susan Jenkins says "I went down to the water and looked, and I saw the cow on the Island and just watched him. I waited for the helicopter. It landed, and they got it ready to go up and waited and saw them lift it up, and that was pretty interesting. I never saw a cow flying in the air before, but now I can say I have."

The cow is emaciated, but has been transported to a local foster farm to be brought back to health.
