Albany -- Georgia's Fire Safety Commissioner warns you to be smart with heaters Tuesday, the coldest night of the season so far.

Many South Georgians will use space heaters like these to keep warm. With temperatures plummeting into the twenties, heaters straining to warm you could present a fire danger. Oxendine said "We have a lot of people who fall sleep with these things up by the bed. They kick the covers off, onto the heater. A lot of people haven't left their house because of that."

John Oxendine says use common sense with heaters. Never set one in a chair or on a table.

If you use a kerosene model, take it outside to fuel it.
