Cold weather brings fire danger

December 13, 2004

Albany -- Freezing temperatures are forecast Monday night and most of the week. That means an increased risk of house fires.

Many South Georgians will light fires in their fireplaces or turn up their heaters overnight. Firefighters say you should check your heaters to make sure they are safe.

Albany Fire Department Assistant Chief James Carswell said "If there is something wrong with it, if it's an electric space heater and the cord is already weak, once it runs for an extended period of time it will break down at that point."

Before you turn on a floor furnace, firefighters say you should clean out dust, dirt, or any objects that may have gathered since last winter.
