Humane Society remembers animals during holidays

December 9, 2004

Albany- When the Albany Humane Society lights its Christmas tree every year, it honors all the animals they had to put down.

There are more than 4,200 lights on this tree, one for each animal put down during 2004. They took in more than 5,100 animals this year. This display board shows the animals brought to the shelter in November.

"So in that 31 days, over 370 animals came through our doors and that was a slow month. I mean the two months before that we did over 500," said Donna Strickland, Albany Humane Society.

If you want to adopt a pet for someone as a Christmas gift, the Humane Society suggests you do it before Christmas so the animal is not overwhelmed on Christmas Day.

Make sure the person receiving the pet is prepared to be a responsible pet owner.
