Bring holiday cheer to battered women

December 1, 2004

Albany - Many battered women and their children will spend the holidays in a shelter.

The Liberty House is asking for families, businesses or organizations to adopt a family. Right now, the Albany crisis center has nearly 50 families on a Christmas adoption list.

These families have escaped from their abusers and are essentially starting over. Executive Director, Silke Deeley, says, "When we think about that, especially during the holidays how sad that is for the families and the children, where they don't have anything and they've left everything they know to come into a shelter to be safe."

There are 17 families who live at the Liberty House in Albany, but the center cares for people in 18 counties.

To adopt a Liberty House family call their administration office at 229-439-7065.

Liberty House workers will need to pick up wrapped or unwrapped gifts by December 17th.
