Dougherty County -- An interim commander of the three Marine Corps Logistics Bases, including Albany's, took charge Thursday  morning.

In his change of command ceremony, Brigadier General Eugene Payne said Albany's role in the war on terrorism is vital.

Brigadier General Eugene Payne takes the flag and command of the Marine Corps entire Logistics Command. General Payne is expected to serve only a few months as Logistics Commander, until a full time commanding general is appointed. But he says the Albany base role will not change. Brig. General Eugene Payne said "We are going to continue to lean forward, because we must, in these difficult times."

Lt. General Richard Kelly, the deputy Commandant of the Marine Corps, praised Albany's support of the troops. "Continue to focus on our war fighters, and be able to sustain wherever they are today, and wherever they are going to go next. And we have not missed a beat since this thing has started."

General Payne replaces Major General Harold Mashburn, who is ill. Kelly said "His fingerprint is on this command. And we are better for having had Major General Mashburn serve in our ranks."

General Mashburn is moving to the Washington D.C. area.
