11 Blazers earn all-conference honors

Valdosta - Valdosta State landed 11 players on the all-Gulf South Conference teams released Monday by the league office in Birmingham.

The Blazers had five first team selections and six second team choices.

Senior offensive guard Torrey Howard is the 40th player in the history of the Gulf South Conference to be named to be named to be a first-team all-conference player for three straight years.

Junior defense end Tim Thompson is a first teamer for a second straight year and all-American candidate Will Rhody is a first team all-GSC pick after setting an NCAA record with 18 consecutive field goals.

Senior running back Tyran Robinson and senior rover Spencer Fortson are also first team all-GSC selections.

The second team choices are senior center Leighton Cooley, junior offensive tackle Will Shelton, senior nose tackle Terel Toomer, senior defensive end Derrick Hill, senior cornerback Sam Reynolds and sophomore punter Travis Tidwell.

Valdosta State (9-1) will host Carson-Newman in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs Saturday at 1pm at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
